Dubai - PayPal wants to double its share of commerce in the Middle East and North Africa in three years, after allowing customers from seven countries in the region to open accounts linked to cards issued by local banks.
The pioneering service for online payments, controlled by eBay, has one million customers in the Middle East and North Africa, about half of which in the UAE, but until recently they needed a credit card or debit card issued outside their region, letsebuy executives said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Now residents of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Jordan can link a PayPal account to credit cards or debit Visa, MasterCard or American Express issued locally, and PayPal plans to expand its reach to countries neighbors. Electronic commerce in the region was estimated at nine billion dollars in 2012, and PayPal currently holds 5 percent in this market. The goal is to raise it to 10 per cent in three years, said Elias Ghanem, PayPal's director for the region.
Most regional commerce spending intended to products outside the region, and only 15 percent of companies in the Middle East and North Africa have online presence.
"Today, consumers do not necessarily find everything you want here. With the growth of the market, traders will create better services and electronic commerce will surpass the national and regional letsebuy international commerce," said Laurent Wakim, director of business development at PayPal Middle East, told Reuters.
